Space-saving sleeping arrangements in Tokyo style
3 sleeping compartments in the smallest of spaces
The Challenge
The daughter and the two sons have grown into teenagers. On the small loft in the vacation rental, they will now have the privacy they need thanks to their own enclosed and well-ventilated sleeping areas with large beds.

The Idea
After many hours of conceptual work and sketching ideas, we found the perfect balance between space, personal privacy, and practicality for everyday use: the Vinval Sleep Box. We were inspired by the “Sleeping Pods Hotels” in Tokyo, which we had visited during a trip to Japan. Combining this with inspiration from yacht and small-boat design, we envisioned three boxes that could be arranged partially nested within one another and at different heights.

A Look at the Mood Board
Work continues in the 3D program to optimize the use of space.
At the base of the boxes is a perforated wall, behind which an air conditioning unit and a ventilation system are concealed.
The materials to be used should be cost-effective and modern, yet complement the existing 1980s style.
All three Sleep Boxes have a perforated section at the foot end to allow fresh air to circulate.

The implementation
The three Sleep Boxes are made of maritime pine and feature a contemporary industrial design. An LED strip that emits indirect light makes the sleeping areas appear larger.
Each headrest section features a built-in niche with LED lighting, a USB charging station, and a power outlet. The open shelves at seat height serve as a convenient work or storage surface.

The teenager got to move into the largest Sleep Box. You can stand upright inside, and it has room for a second shelf. Plus, you can watch the snow falling through the skylight.
Curtains made of thick wool felt not only create an alpine atmosphere, but also provide sufficient light blocking and offer some sound insulation. A small, elegant light fixture on each wall of the box completes the unique character of this design.
