Preliminary study: Schamuela cow shed — A blend of alpine charm and modernity
The newly opened (October 2023) restaurant «Kuhstall Schamuela» shines anew after extensive renovations in the alpine heart of Lenzerheide. Run under the «Hüttenzauber» brand by Kappeler Gastro AG, this dining destination combines rustic stable charm with a touch of modern sophistication.
We were responsible for the preliminary study for this project. Below are our 3D visualizations from 2018.
The Challenge
The vision for this project was unique and multifaceted: combining an alpine atmosphere with modern elements and Japanese flair to create our «Neoalpine» style. The challenge was to achieve a harmonious fusion of these seemingly contrasting styles and integrate them across different areas of the restaurant.

The Idea
The core idea was to keep the cozy atmosphere of a traditional cow barn, featuring hay, cows, aged wood, and stone, while adding a modern touch with playful lighting, LED accents, and a central fireplace as an eye-catcher. Upstairs, the open feel of a hayloft was to be captured, complete with high ceilings, a wine tower connecting both levels, and a minimalist yet welcoming vibe. Oak parquet flooring, Japanese chairs, Scandinavian-inspired lights, and subtle touches of copper all contribute to this ambiance.

Bringing the design to life in 3D
Our initial design ideas for the preliminary study included: rammed concrete dominating the walls and hallways, blending rustic elements with a modern flair. The restrooms feature a modern industrial design with exposed copper faucets and highly polished copper mirrors. Simple "Buster and Punch" light fixtures provide a wonderful contrast to this rustic look.

The upstairs smoker's lounge exudes calm thanks to its understated Japandi style: minimal colors, warm tones, and accents of cow and sheep hide. The central element—fire—runs through all floors, giving every area a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Here too, the fireplace takes center stage to create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere.
The Execution
A lot changed during the actual implementation. For instance, the smoker's lounge made way for an extension of the restaurant.
The newly opened restaurant "Kuhstall Schamuela" promises culinary delights and a glimpse into its unique interior design.
Led by operations manager Amanda Braun and head chef Sören Pajewski, the "Kuhstall Schamuela" offers a fine blend of regional specialties and creative takes on classic dishes.
